In the divine land of Mount Kailash, Lord Shiva, Parvati, Murugan, and Ganesha lived happily together.
One day, Sage Narada arrived with a divine fruit of wisdom (Gnana Pazham) and said, "This fruit must be eaten whole by just one person; it cannot be shared!"
To decide who should get it, Shiva announced a challenge:
"Whoever circles the world three times first will win the fruit!"
Lord Murugan immediately mounted his peacock and sped off around the world. But Lord Ganesha, realizing he was slow, used his wisdom!
Instead of traveling the world, he simply circled Shiva and Parvati three times and said, "For me, my world is my parents!"
Impressed by his intelligence, Shiva and Parvati gave the fruit to Ganesha.
Murugan’s Anger!
When Murugan returned, he saw that Ganesha had already received the fruit. He was furious!
"I traveled around the entire world, yet no one respected my effort! Mother, at least you should have supported me!" he questioned Parvati.
But since Parvati remained silent, Murugan was deeply hurt.
Feeling abandoned, he declared, "Just as you have let me go, you too will one day be separated from Father!"
Saying this, Murugan left Kailash and went to Palani Hills, where he began deep meditation.
The Effect of Murugan’s Curse on Parvati
Some stories say that because of Murugan’s curse, Goddess Parvati was later separated from Lord Shiva and had to perform penance to reunite with him.
Murugan at Palani!
