Kanda Sashti Viratham is a very important fast observed in devotion to Lord Murugan. Every year, it is observed for six days starting from the Shashti Tithi in the Tamil month of Aippasi (October–November).
Why is this Viratham important?
This Viratham is observed to commemorate the day when Lord Murugan defeated the demons Surapadman, Singamukhan, and Tarakasuran. During these six days, devotees dedicate themselves fully to the worship of Lord Murugan.
Rituals and Worship Methods:
🔹 Visiting Murugan temples in the morning and evening for prayers.
🔹 Wearing white clothes and maintaining both physical and mental purity during the fasting period.
🔹 Chanting and reading Kanda Sashti Kavasam, Thiruppugazh, and Skanda Puranam for spiritual benefits.
🔹 The sixth day is significant as it marks the event of Soorasamharam, the grand re-enactment of Murugan’s victory over Surapadman.
🔹 After the fasting period, Thirukkalyanam (the celestial wedding of Murugan, symbolizing his divine grace) is celebrated.
